The CIR Policy & Education Initiative works to provide resident physicians, faculty, and teaching hospital employers with the expertise, resources, and support necessary to improve patient safety and quality of care.
We aim to identify and foster novel solutions to the education and training of new generations of physicians.
The QI Innovation Institute provides a space for testing and disseminating innovative on-line curriculum and sponsors dynamic conferences and trainings, as well as individual QI project support. CIR PEI also offers opportunities for residents to share their work via QI Gateway at www.QIGateway.org.
Our focus is on developing resident physician leaders in safety and quality who will go on to teach others and lead the way in transforming health care in the U.S.
Mission and Goals
The mission of CIR PEI's quality improvement work is to train the next generation of physicians to learn and lead the way in patient safety and quality improvement in the nation’s teaching hospitals.
Our Goals are three-fold:
- Develop a robust QI Scholars Program, including on-site “QI Clinic” for residents to accelerate the acquisition of cutting edge safety and quality knowledge and skills.
- Dedicate resources to make QI Gateway - www.QIGateway.org - a central hub for patient safety and QI activities. QI Gateway is a website specifically designed for resident physicians to learn and share patient safety and QI skills.
- Leverage resources, expertise, and networking to develop today’s physicians in training into the safety and quality leaders.

Gregory S. Ogrinc, MD, MSGreg Ogrinc is a general internist at the White River Junction VA hospital in White River Junction, VT. He is the Senior Scholar for the White River Junction VA Quality Scholars Fellowship, the Director of the Office of Health Systems and Clinical Improvement (OHSCI), and an Associate Professor of Community and Family Medicine and of Medicine at Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth.

Karyn Baum is Professor of Medicine and Associate Chair for Clinical Improvement at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Baum specializes in quality improvement (QI) with a special interest in teamwork as a means to improve quality and safety and health care.

Vineet Arora, MD, MAPPVineet Arora is an expert at using novel methods, such as video vignettes and social media to promote clinician awareness and behavior change. In 2012, she was selected as HealthLeaders Magazine's one of 20 people who make healthcare better.
Rosemary Gibson, M.Sc.Rosemary Gibson is a national authority on the health care industry and patient safety. She is Senior Advisor at The Hastings Center, an independent, non-partisan, non-profit bioethics research institute based in the United States that is dedicated to the examination of essential questions in health care, biotechnology, and the environment.
Neel Shah, MD, MAPPNeel Shah is the founder and executive director of Costs of Care, and a Harvard-affiliated OB/GYN physician. He has published widely on the issue of costs of care and has worked with residents across the country on practical approaches to controlling cost in health care system.
