“I had an amazing time in Haiti; just got back last night and can’t believe how fast that week went.  Working there was unlike anything else I’ve ever done and probably contributed to my professional growth more than any experience I’ve had in residency thus far.  I’m really fortunate to have received the CIR scholarship to participate in this, as otherwise it would not have been feasible for me.”

Thanks to PEI financial scholarships funded by generous contributions from Jeffrey and Paula Gural and Newmark & Co, a number of CIR members will be traveling to Haiti in 2016-2017 academic year to volunteer their medical services through the University of Miami’s Project Medishare.

Volunteer physicians will deploy for one or two weeks to Haiti and provide medical care at either Bernard Mevs Hospital in Port-au-Prince or at family and maternity mobile clinics in the Central Plateau. Project Medishare's regulations require that volunteers must be one of the following specialties:

Port-au-Prince

  • Internal Medicine
  • Emergency Medicine

Central Plateau:

  • Family Medicine
  • Pediatrics
  • Ob/Gyn

IM or EM residents who wish to volunteer in Port-au-Prince must also be a PGY3 or above.

The CIR/PEI grant will cover:

  • The Project Medishare deployment fee, which covers accommodations in Haiti, transportation to and from the airport in Haiti, and food during your deployment.
  • Up to $650 of the travel cost to and from Miami, including air fare, travel to and from the airport.

If you have any questions, email Allison Maliandi-Warheit, CIR Special Projects Coordinator, at awarheit@cirseiu.org.

PEI is committed to providing resident physicians and faculty with learning opportunities to develop these important systems improvement skills.  PEI also seeks to develop resident physician champions who can share what they have learned with their faculty and resident colleagues – and develop into published QI leaders after completing their training.
