The CIR Policy and Education Initiative (PEI) is pleased to offer a new scholarship program for CIR members who want to volunteer to provide medical care in countries struggling with chronic poverty, a disaster, and/or a refugee crisis. We will provide 11 scholarships of up to $2,000 each.

The Global Medical Volunteer Scholarship (GMVS) builds on the experience with CIR PEI’s Haiti Relief Program, a partnership with the University of Miami’s Project Medishare. The Haiti Program was initiated in response to the devastating 2010 earthquake. More than 75 residents have volunteered at the Bernard Mevs Hospital in Port-au-Prince in the last five years. Some have described their experience as the most impactful part of their residency.

CIR members have shown great interest in medical volunteer opportunities throughout the world. Many have traveled far distances to do this important work. The GMVS allows you to choose a volunteer experience that fits your residency schedule for whatever time period you can devote.

You can browse our list of example programs here, or propose deployment to any program you find on your own that meets these criteria:

  • Provides services in a country or region affected by chronic poverty and/or disaster
  • Is a non-profit organization
  • Has no religious or political affiliation
  • Has been in operation for at least three years

CIR PEI reserves the right to reject any program it deems unsuitable.

Scholarship recipients can receive reimbursement for volunteer-related expenses (e.g., travel, food, lodging, registration and and program fees) up to a maximum of $2,000. All applicants must go through the application process prior to their deployment. Deployment must be completed within one year of selection.

Applications are open from November 18 through December 21, 2016.

The CIR PEI GMVS is made possible by generous contributions from Jeffrey and Paula Gural and Newmark & Co.
